Intonational variation in third party complaints in Spanish
Rajiv Rao
Journal of Speech Sciences · 3(1), 141-168 · 2013
What the paper examines
This study examines intonation in third-party complaints produced by four speakers of Mexican Spanish. An elicitation task compares complaints addressed to a friend and to a boss, considering pitch patterns and social relationships.
Reading it in context
The small sample and the elicited situations are important limits. The results concern communication in context and should not be used to label a person’s natural speaking style as incorrect.
A question to read with
How did the relationship with the listener affect the task and the pitch analysis?
