Foreign accent: length of residence, listener and stimulus effect

Journal of Speech Sciences · 3(2), 1-20 · 2013
What the paper examines
This study examines judgments of English speech produced by Mandarin speakers. It compares listener groups and speech materials, including sentences, spontaneous speech and filtered recordings, while considering length of residence.
Reading it in context
Accent judgments depend on speakers, listeners and tasks. An accent is not itself a disorder, and these research judgments are different from evaluating whether someone can communicate comfortably and effectively.
A question to read with
Which listener and stimulus differences influenced the judgments in this study?
